a life well lived

So, I was commenting to a friend how I am pretty much over concerts. I hate the entire concert industry. How I hate $40 parking, $7 beers, and $125 tickets. I hate EVERYTHING about Ticketmaster.  Of course, I have written about that here.  and here.  Oh, and here.  I still love the music, but it just isn't worth the trouble anymore. I go about once a year. I mean, I can't just stop all concerts. I live in the same town as Red Rocks. I got to see Van Morrison play Red Rocks. I mean... holy shit!

So, I was thinking about the shows I have seen. This is my 27th 32 year (?) of going to concerts (am 37 now,  42 now)- I saw the Police farewell tour when I was 10). This is the stuff I have gotten to see with my own eyes over the years. Some, more than others.

Ø Tom Petty sing Free Falling
Ø Bruce Springsteen sing Born to Run
Ø Levon Helm sing the Weight
Ø Robert Plant sing Going to California
Ø Allman Brothers sing Blue Sky
Ø Eric Clapton sing Layla

Ø Rush sing Closer to the Heart
Ø Spinal Tap sing Big Bottom
Ø Janes’ Addiction sing Jane Says
Ø Red Hot Chili Peppers sing Under the Bridge
Ø Nirvana sing Smells Like Teen Spirit
Ø Pearl Jam sing Alive
Ø Pink Floyd sing Comfortably Numb
Ø Ozzy Osbourne sing Crazy Train
Ø Metallica sing OneNeil Young sing After the Goldrush
Ø 10,000 Maniacs sing What’s the Matter Here

Ø Joe Cocker sing You are so Beautiful
Ø Don McClean sing American Pie
Ø Motley Crue sing Smoking in the Boys Room
Ø Jethro Tull sing Aqualung

Ø Big Head Todd sing Bittersweet
Ø Beastie Boys sing Sabotage
Ø Barenaked Ladies sing Brian Wilson
Ø Bad Brains sing Sacred Love
Ø Ac/Dc sing Back in Black

* you may notice those seem slightly alphabetic. True, I used my iPod to coax my memory.
So, who have I missed? What do I regret? I never got to see Guns & Roses, Johnny Cash, or John Lee Hooker. Those omissions bum me out.

I only go to small, local events now... since leaving Toronto, that's pretty much all we have...

Being somewhat older than you, my list includes Pink Floyd's N.A debut of Dark Side of the Moon, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and others in Festival Express (Toronto AND Calgary), Genesis OPENING for Lou Reed, and every other Toronto Genesis appearance up to the Lamb, and a bit after. ELP in a small Toronto soccer field, circa Tarkus. King Crimson and Procol Harum double bill, 1971. Zeppelin in Montreal. Hendrix in Toronto.

My too-late-now list: just missed seeing the Doors, and Lennon/Clapton/Plastic Ono Band. Saw the Jefferson Airplane, but not until they sucked (early Starship days)

Almost forgot... my FIRST concert... Iron Butterfly opening for the Turtles... In a Gadda da Vida Baby!!!
correction: I said I had seen Paul McCartney sing the boxer. Not true, obviously. I was referencing Paul Simon. I have not (yet) seen Sir Paul.

Glad I read the "Paul" clarification before I left my comment... but covers don't count. Motley Crue singing 'Smokin in the Boys Room?' That's Loggins and Messina. Crue equals Home Sweet Home... or something like that. Police equals Roxanne.

What about Aerosmith? Bon Jovi? Eagles? INXS? Smashing Pumpkins? ZZ Top? Counting Crows? Alice Cooper? Billy Idol? Billy Joel? Cheap Trick? Van Halen? Neil Young? Oasis? David Bowie? Def Leppard? Pixies? R.E.M.? Rolling Stones? Foo Fighters? J. J. Cale? Ace of Base? Musical Youth? N'SYNC? Backstreet Boys? Tiffany?

So, Jaime asks:

Well, good questions.

o Aerosmith > seen ‘em
o Smashing Pumpkins > seen ‘em
o ZZ Top > seen ‘em
o Billy Joel > seen ‘em
o Neil Young > seen him
o Van Halen? I have seen Sammy twice, and Roth once. Does that count?
o JJ Cale > seen him (with and without Clapton)

Does that help? So, what’s left? Foo Fighters, Mark Knopfler, and G&R

My first concert was "the Hollies" in Adelaide, early 70's.
They were not happy, though - totally outdone by their "support act" - Ross Ryan. He was Fantastic!
